University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG)

Care, training & education and research, with Healthy Ageing in the heart of the three core tasks.

The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) was established in 2005 by the merger of the Medical Faculty of the University of Groningen and the Academic Hospital Groningen (AZG). At present UMCG is one of the largest hospitals in the Netherlands. More than 12,000 employees provide patient care, are involved in medical education and perform scientific research, focused on ‘healthy and active ageing’.

Several large-scale research programs and facilities, such as LifeLines en more recently ERIBA, were set up within Healthy Ageing.

One of UMCG’s projects is LifeLines, a prospective cohort study in the Netherlands, which offers a unique opportunity to study the relationship between diet, lifestyle, genetic predisposition and (chronic) diseases.
